What is Botox?

Botox is the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure done in the United States, with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons estimating 7.23 million procedures performed each year. It’s a series of small injections that effectively reduce and eliminate facial lines and wrinkles, specifically wrinkles that are:

• Around the corners of your eyes (crow’s feet)
• Between your eyebrows (frown lines)
• On your forehead

Botox works by temporarily disrupting the communication between your nerves and facial muscles in the injection sites, effectively reducing muscle activity wherever it’s injected. What happens when I get Botox or fillers?

Dr. Cheney administers your Botox or filler treatments during a quick and easy office visit.

When you come in for your treatment, Dr. Cheney cleans your treatment areas with an antibacterial agent and then maps out your injection sites with a marker. Next, he uses a small needle to inject the serum into the shallow areas of your facial muscles. The injections only take a few minutes to complete and are relatively painless — most patients describe the sensation as feeling like a little pinch.

Once he’s injected you, you’re all done! The procedure requires no incisions or general anesthesia, and the downtime is either minimal or nonexistent. At most, you’ll be a little sore in your injection site, and you might have some light bruising. Many patients schedule their Botox or fillers appointments for their lunch breaks and go back to work immediately after.
